Want a beautiful chin that fits your face?

We worry about not having the perfectly shaped chin proportionate to our face. When your chin is proportional to the shape and size of your nose, the face looks attractive. Chin enhancement is a common practice to help us in shaping the imperfect chin. Whether you want to enhance your weak chin through Chin Augmentation or you wish to make your jaws less prominent through Chin Reduction, medical science has various options for you to choose from.

The medical term for Chin Augmentation, i.e., increasing the shape and size of the chin is known as Genioplasty. It is a surgical procedure. A weak chin causes a normal size nose to look big on the face. Thus, this surgery is often performed during the time of rhinoplasty and helps to balance the facial proportions.

What are Chin Implants

Chin implants are one of the solutions to augment the shape and size of the chin. Individually customized implants are used depending on the anatomy of the patient’s facial structure and their personal cosmetic goal.

Who needs a Chin Implant?

Chin augmentation is not specific to any gender. It is popular among both men and women. The patient’s teeth and jaw must function well for the procedure to happen. The patient must have a good immune system to avoid any post-surgery infection. Generally due to the following reasons, people opt for chin implants:

– Birth defects
– Deformity due to injury
– Protruding nose
– Sunken or short chin

Types of Chin Implants

Silicone chin implants are most commonly used. They are soft and flexible; available in different shapes and sizes. Normally the silicone chin implants don’t cause any adverse side effects to the body after getting implanted. Other materials used are Gore-Tex (polytetrafluoroethylene), Medpor (polyethylene) and Acellular Dermal Matrix.

Chin Implant Procedure

A cut is made, either inside or outside the mouth under the chin and a well-fit pocket is created in front of the chin bone, where the implant is placed by attaching it to the bone or soft tissue. Instead of pockets, some surgeons use screws to attach the implants to bone or soft tissues. The procedure is completed by sutured closure of the surgical cut. The visible scar mark can be avoided if the cut is inside the mouth. Actual surgery takes 30 -60 mins. The procedure is performed using local anesthesia.

Potential Risk Factors of Chin Implants

The complications are minor like swelling, soreness and numbness which can last up to six weeks. Rarely there could be complications due to infections which can be cured through medication. There could be a possibility of a shift of the implants internally which can be avoided by restraining any contact on the surface of the implant till the patient has completely recovered.
