How does a double chin form?
A double chin is a layer of fat formed below the chin and around the neck which looks like a second chin. It is also known as submental fat. Normally it is associated with weight gain, however this is not always the cause; it also appears in some people who are not overweight. Aging is another reason for the development of a double chin as collagen in the skin depletes, causing the facial skin to sag.
Ways to get rid of the double chin
Exercise – Exercises like Jaw Jut, Neck Roll, Tongue Stretch, and Neck Stretch are suggested which helps to reduce the double chin. However these are no sure shot guarantee of complete disappearance of the double chin. The process of exercise is time consuming and it might take years for some people to see an effect.
Weight Loss – Double chin could also be a result of being overweight. Maintaining a healthy balanced diet and exercise will help to reduce the excess weight all over the body, including the double chin. However, lots of times, though the general weight of the body reduces, the double chin is still visible for a long time due to age or certain hereditary traits in the family.
Kybella Injection – Deoxycholic acid (Kybella) is an injectable drug which helps to absorb the fat of the double chin. This doesn’t require any surgery. On average, it may take 20 or more injections per treatment session to treat a double chin. This can be repeated up to 6 treatment sessions with a gap of 1 month in between each session. It is performed under local anesthesia. The duration of each treatment is typically 15 minutes and might be a little uncomfortable. These are quick and easy ways of getting rid of the double chin. However it just helps to reduce specific portions of the chin and does not treat the entire neck. The after effects could be swelling and soreness for a few days. Since Kybella Injections are made of Deoxycholic acid which is a very powerful solvent and can dissolve fat, blood vessels and nerves, in extreme cases, there could be nerve injury in the jaw due to the injections.
Chin Liposuction – Instead of going for a full facelift, lots of people prefer chin liposuction. It is a less invasive procedure, where results can be seen within 4-6 weeks. In this, the surgeon makes two small incisions and inserts a tube called a cannula which is used to suction out the unwanted fat in the chin area. Local anesthesia is used for this procedure. Recovery time is shorter than most procedures. The patient is required to wear a chin strap for a few days. Many people who are looking to get rid of their double chin do not prefer to inject Kybella (Deoxycholic acid) into their body and opt, instead, for the liposuction procedure to get rid of the excess fat in the chin area.
