All You Need To Know About Facelift Surgery

Facelift surgery helps you to erase unwanted wrinkles and lift drooping, sagging skin and facial features. Facelift surgery is clinically known as ‘rhytidectomy’ and has become highly popular among both men and women in just about every corner of the globe. Why? Well because fear of aging is one of those things that truly transcends cultures. To be afraid of aging is a base human instinct.

However, It is important to understand that the facelift surgery just helps you temporarily set back the hands of time — it cannot simply bring the aging process to a standstill.  So it is important to have realistic expectations from the surgery and be open to the possibility of repeat procedures in the future if needed.

Who are the ideal candidates for Facelift Surgery?

Before going for facelift surgery, the candidate should have a realistic expectation from the surgery. It is important to understand both pros and the cons of the surgery and how much the surgery can help in the given condition of the candidate’s facial features. Here age is not the important factor for the facelift surgery. The condition of the skin and the health of the candidate are more crucial points to be considered.

Normally candidates post 40 years opt for the surgery. The doctor assesses the existing condition of the candidate through open discussion, before the facelift surgery. If the doctor finds the candidate not suitable for facelift surgery, the candidate will be recommended an alternative procedure for facelift.

Certain other factors are also considered before the surgery:

  • Bone structure – The underlying bone structure needs to be good to support the skin for the facelift surgery. Candidates with weak facial features can consider using fillers or implants along with the facelift or as an alternative.
  • Skin elasticity – For the facelift surgery, it is important for the candidate to have good skin elasticity that will help to retain the flexibility of the skin. Facelifts help to remove wrinkles and tighten the sagging skin by stretching the skin. Thus supple and flexible skin helps in the procedure.
  • Loose skin – Similarly candidates with loose skin on the face and the neck can use the procedure to tighten and trim the skin.
  • Good health – The facelift surgery is an invasive procedure and a lot of attention is given on healing and recovery. Thus, it is absolutely important for the candidate to be in good health. The candidate should discuss any pre-existing medical condition in advance with the doctor.

How is the Facelift Surgery performed?

The procedure is performed to lift and tighten the underlying muscles to retain the youthfulness of the face. It also involves removing the excess fat and skin that make the face look older. After an extensive discussion with the doctor on the suitability of facelift surgery on the candidate, the doctor and candidate decide the type of facelift that is appropriate in rejuvenating the candidate’s face.

Facelift surgery is usually performed by administering general anesthesia. In certain less invasive types of facelift, the doctors administers local anesthesia.

The incision is done depending on the type of facelift. In case of traditional facelift and mini facelifts, the incisions are done at a length from the temple in the hairline to behind the ears till the end in the lower scalp. After the incision, the procedure begins by separating the skin from the underlying tissues and muscles. This way the deeper tissues are repositioned and the jowls and excess fat are removed.

During this procedure the muscles are also lifted. Following this the excess skin is removed and the remaining skin is placed back on the newly done facial tissues, giving a smooth and youthful contour. The re-draping of the skin is done in a way that it is not over-tightening to the skin.

How long does it take to recover from a Facelift Surgery?

Bruising and swelling are normal after a facelift surgery and will be at its peak in the first 2 days. After the initial 2 days, both bruising and swelling will come down gradually and won’t be visible after 2 weeks. Doctors might even put a bandage around the face to minimize bruising and swelling. It is common to put a drainage tube at the site of the incision which helps to drain the blood and the fluid.

Though facelift surgery has a complicated procedure, the recovery is rather smooth and fast. However the recovery period depends on the type of facelift surgery. More extensive surgery will require more time to recover. Patients return back to normal routines in 2 weeks after a traditional standard facelift surgery. In case of mini facelift surgery, the time to recover is shorter. It is advised by doctor to refrain from any heavy exercise or outdoor activities for minimum 4 weeks.

It is important to avoid direct sunlight as after the surgery the patient will be more prone to sun burns. If you need to go out always use sunscreen to protect your face. Your plastic surgeon will call you back in for a routine check-up after a week.
